Local SEO checklist for hair salon owners owners

Local search for a salon runs on the same facts as the booking book: hours, services, stylist levels and rebooking. Fix the profile, then the chair schedule.

What to take away

  • Fix the Google Business Profile firstexact name, address and phone, the most specific true category, live hours per stylist, and a service menu with durations you can deliver.
  • Build one page per service that fills a chair you cannot sell, and put duration band, stylist level and price band on that page.
  • Ask for a review at the chair, the moment the client says they are happy. Never filter the ask and never pay for it.
  • Record three numbers each monthqualified calls, booking clicks and direction requests from the Performance tab, and chair utilization per stylist from the booking software report.
  • Let chair utilization decide spend. Full chairs mean raise prices or add a chair. Empty chairs with ringing phones mean the booking path leaks.

The checklist, in order

  1. Claim and verify the profile. Use your exact trading name, not a keyword string. Google's local ranking guidance asks for complete information and current hours, and you can read it at Tips to improve your local ranking on Google.
  2. Complete every field. That means:
    • Category: the most specific true one. Hair salon, hair extension technician and beauty salon are separate searches.
    • Description: up to 750 characters, naming your city and main services.
    • Hours: regular hours plus special hours for every holiday closure.
    • Services: each line with a duration band and a price band. A fuller service menu with real durations shows which lines deserve their own page.
    • Photos: exterior, interior, team, and one per main service.
    • Attributes: appointment required, wheelchair access, gender-neutral pricing.
  3. Match name, address and phone everywherewebsite, Apple Maps, Yelp, Instagram bio. Include the suite number and the parking note.
  4. Build the service pages. One page, one service. State duration, stylist levels and price band in the first screen.
  5. Add the consultation line to every color pagestrand test and patch test before a first color appointment.
  6. Set the review ask. In person, every finished client, no filter.
  7. Log the three numbers monthly. Calls, booking clicks and direction requests come from the Google Business Profile Performance tab. Chair utilization comes from the booking software report: booked service hours divided by available chair hours, per stylist, per week.

Salon profile essentials

  • Complete business information
  • Current hours
  • Photos
  • Most specific true category
  • Identical name, address, phone
  • Real durations and price bands

Where the money goes, and how long it takes

The profile itself is free. Verification typically takes 3 to 14 days depending on the method. The field work is a typical 2 to 4 hours.

Service pages cost time, not tools. A typical five-page set runs 6 to 12 hours if you already know your durations and price bands. A writer adds cost, and the page still needs your numbers.

Monthly tracking is a typical 20 to 30 minutes. No paid tool is required at this stage. Before you add a page for a low-margin add-on, check pricing against the margin you need so the page sells a service worth doing.

One warning on hours. If a stylist rents a chair, those hours are not yours to publish as shop hours. The IRS common-law test explains the control factors.

Example service page and profile description

Example page title: "Balayage in Austin: Duration, Stylist Level and Price Band". City in the title, service in the title, and the three facts a client needs before booking.

Example Google Business Profile description: "Hair salon in Austin, Texas. Cuts, balayage, extensions and treatments. Appointment only. Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 7pm. Cut from [junior price]; balayage from [senior price]." Replace the brackets with your own bands.

Reviews, and how to ask without breaking the rules

Ask every finished client, in person, at the chair or the counter. Do not hand the request only to clients you expect to be happy, and do not discount for it. The FTC guide on soliciting and paying for online reviews treats selective solicitation and incentives as misleading.

Thanks for coming in today. If you have a moment, a Google review helps other people find us. Here is the link.

Best moment: when the client looks in the mirror, likes what they see, and before they pay. That is the peak of satisfaction, not the exit door.

Reply to every review without naming a client's service, condition or treatment. "We would like to make this right, please call the salon" is enough.

The three numbers and where to record them

Calls, booking clicks and direction requests live in the Google Business Profile Performance tab. Chair utilization lives in the booking software report: booked service hours divided by available chair hours, per stylist per week. Pull both once a month.

The three numbers

Advantages

  • High utilization, low calls: you are full. Raise prices at the levels that are full, or add a chair.

Drawbacks

  • High calls, low utilization: the booking path leaks. Test it on a phone.
  • Both low: rebooking is the job, not search. A daily operations checklist shows whether checkout actually books the next visit.

Where to spend next

Common questions

How often should the profile be updated?
Hours and holiday closures the day they change. Photos monthly. Service menu whenever a price band or stylist level moves. Stale hours cause more one-star reviews than anything else.
Should each stylist have their own page?
Only if they have their own following and their own booking link. Otherwise it splits salon relevance and leaves the client unsure who they are booking.
Does any of this touch licensing or sanitation?
No. Who may perform a service, and to what standard, is set by your state board of cosmetology. Chemical services follow the manufacturer's instructions after a documented consultation.
How do I know whether to spend on SEO or fix operations first?
Compare chair utilization with qualified calls for one month. Both low means fix rebooking before you buy anything. For the paid side, the marketing and growth guide covers what to test first.
